Durian Poetry by Shunyam Nirav

Poetry is not particularly my specialty
(as many people will probably agree
after reading the verses that follow!)
but as Alfred Russell Wallace reported
in his 19th century travels in SE Asia,
"The natives give [durian] honorable titles,
exalt it, and make verses on it."
After eating a few hundred durians,
I certainly comprehend that!
There have been times
after eating a great durian,
in that satiated durian-glow space,
that silly poems and raps like these
indeed have just easily rolled right on out!
And if nothing else,
these verses express that space pretty well...

I LIKE THEM SPIKY FRUIT

Oh, I like them spiky fruit
They're so creamy
and they're so yummy
They feel so good
down in my tummy
Oh, I like them spiky fruit

Oh, I like them spiky fruit
They're so luscious
and some say smelly
They're so satisfying
in my belly
Oh, I like them spiky fruit

Oh, I like them spiky fruit
They're big and brown
and so nutritious
There's no eatin'
more delicious
Oh, I like them spiky fruit!

(inspired by a travel story from
friend and durian farmer Stephan Reeve of Maui, he being stopped from boarding a plane in Malaysia due to carrying [connoisseur] durians, by a stern guard who asked if he was carrying any of those "spiky fruits")
(p.s. Steph managed to talk his way on to the plane with the durians!)

GOT A BELLY FULL OF DURIAN

Got a belly full of durian and I feel fine
Got a belly full of durian and it's so da kine
Got a belly full of durian Nature's bliss
Got a belly full of durian it's too good to miss
Got a belly full of durian you'll be amazed
Got a belly full of durian give thanks and praise
Got a belly full of durian yum yum yum
Got a belly full of durian mane padme hum!

CHANTHABURI (1)

Durians piled in markets,
Durians piled in trucks,
Durians in small mountains
Buy three for two bucks!

Ship 'em to the city
Sell 'em in the town
Everybody's happy
'Cause the durians are coming down!

Chanthaburi orchards
Bring everybody glee
For all these kinds of durians
Are truly sooooo yum-mee!

CHANTHABURI (2)

Well I came to Chanthaburi
And what did I see
So many spiky fruits
For you and me!

Durians here,
durians there
In Chanthaburi,
durians are everywhere!

Durians in the market,
Durians on the street,
Chanthaburi durians
are so good to eat!

Durians on the trees
Durians in a truck
If you like durians
In Chanthaburi you're in luck!

(these two poems more or less wrote themselves
 during my 2001 pilgrimage
to the durian capital of the world, Chanthaburi, Thailand
(see botany area of Durian Palace)

DURIAN HAIKU

Durian fragrance
Heat waves rising in desert
Luscious oasis

Durians: not just
Delicious and nutritious...
Blissfulness itself

Ecstatic flavor
Spiky fruit's luscious pudding
Nature's grandest food

DURIAN

by JuliNadia Herman
mfjs76@hotmail.com

Cracks upon cracks, riches revealed,
Slivers of gold, treasures concealed,
Grasping fingers prying apart
Doors to rooms, now no longer hidden.

Every room is amply filled with
Golden riches on pure white pith.
Guards of green, prickly menacing,
Litter the field at every inch.

On beds of glossy shiny white,
Soft golden pillows greet your sight.
Nestled close, cradled with love,
Molding in to every curve.

Wafting aroma, strong and bold,
Releasing tales of young and old.
Pungent and putrid, revolting to some,
Yet delectably fragrant — how can that be?

A whiff chock-full of controversy,
Opinions riddled with fallacy.
Banned in places of fancy manners,
Lest it render people unconscious.

A golden treasure now in your hand,
Airy and soft, yet it feels so grand.
Moistness dissolving, lilting the senses.
Flavor so rich, it tastes so divine!

Buttery, custard-like, tastes like heaven,
Alluring appeal intricately woven.
Golden pillow releasing its magic,
Emanating warmth, inside and throughout.

Airiness filled with ultimate richness,
Subtlety bursts with utter creaminess.
Soft yellow flesh promising enchantment.
Leaving you sighing in sheer contentment.
