I love Durians !
I can only get them here in Canada frozen whole or in sections at the local
asian markets.
They are very good, but I dream of trying one fresh from the tree in the tropics.
Thanks for all the info and pictures on your site.

Save the Wild Durian and co-create Paradise! Imagine a Durian Retreat! Save the wild and natural varieties of durian all over the Earth!
There are 1000's of kinds still being grown and we want to save /create a living seed bank (big permaculture orchard and retreat center) here in Thailand of the many varieties! Looking for supports for this important project! Please contact us and help save the wild durians and other tropical fruit & palm varieties that are being lost forever.
Looking for someone (s) who wants to help get the project really off the ground. Preferable someone who has enough funds to get the project very much underway in a big way. I would like to purchase 100 acres of land in Thailand (or Hawaii) and set up the largest and best collection of durian varieties in the world. Also we would have an exclusive raw food / durian healing retreat center for durian lovers! We don't have the proper funding to do this (buy the land and develop it into a permaculture/ orchard/ retreat) and this is the kind of help we need most. We could take care of the rest of the project with a small team and would love help with the other parts too if you feel inspired please contact! My brothers have a place called PANGAIA www.pangaia.cc in Hawaii on the Big Island.
Thanks for your interest, please feel free to write me back! This project one day will be worth a lot in the future and is a good sound investment on many levels.

What a great site!! I dearly love this incredible fruit. I love my wonderful friend for sharing this fruit with me. She was scared I would not like it, but after my first bite I was hooked. We ate the entire fruit. It was a large one. I buy them all the time now, at my local Asian store. They all regognize me and know I am coming in for the wonderful Durian fruit. I really enjoyed reading your web pages, I was curious as to the nutritional value. I was glad to see just how great it is.

Inspired by your site, I set out to day in search of Durian. I went to the Chinese mall near my school and found a nice bin full. The did not emit the foul stench I had been warned about, but instead a very pleasing, exotic perfume. It cost me $8 and I managed to cut myself on one of the spikes, but eventually I got it home. Using a Machete I hacked it open and had the most unusual gastronomic experience of my life! It was like nothing I had ever tasted before. At first, it was somewhat disgusting, like an onion omelete combined with banana, but the more I ate, the more I like it, and now I am hooked. Thank you!

What a great website. And really useful too, since so many Westerners have never even heard of a durian, much less eaten or smelled it. I ate my first durian in 2002. The first time I ate some it was okay. The second time I liked it better, and by the third or fourth time I was totally converted. I try to eat all or mostly-all raw food diet. My health really requires that I do at this point. And durian is one of my most special treats, helping me to know that I am not being deprived at all. There can be no sense of deprivation while eating a durian, haha! It is very much an sensual and gastronomic delight. I have only had the frozen durian. I usually wait until it is thawed out, but not always! One day I would really enjoy the chance to eat fresh durian too. Thanks for the website. Now when I tell anyone about durian I can send them here to learn more.

Greetings, fellow readers. I have long heard of the durian fruit.
Omnipresent in all Asian supermarkets and in street vendor carts in
Chinatown, it's spiky surface and rough brown skin stand out quite jarringly
next to the succulent sweet shape of peaches, lychees, and mangos. Not to be
mistaken with the "Ugly Fruit" that one sometimes sees in supermarkets, the
durian fruit's reputation proceeds its taste. So fetid it is that in some
countries it is banned from public places and transportation vehicles. Often
likened to the stench of sewers or an oven gas-leak, the taste of the durian
fruit has also been likened to the taste of a woman's "lotus flower." I have
met a quite few men who have confessed their initial shock from the
head-reeling foul-smell of a ripe durian exposed wide open in front of them.
But almost all the men developed a monomaniacal craze for that "special
durian taste." I just can't get enough of it, one said to me in confidence.
It's just like WOMAN, the other said with emphasis. And as these men
described the taste of the durian to me, a mist would glaze over their eyes
so full of lust and wanton as if the mere thought of the durian itself is
titillation enough.
I myself have never tasted a durian, but I have
used it as a way of measuring a man's worthiness of my lotus blossom. One
can tell many a thing from how a gentleman caller consumes the fruit. Some
gently nibble and lick like a tender pup who is not worthy of a second
glace. Others may prod a bit with their mouths without passion. And there
are those who truly devour the durian like a wily adventurer parched from
his long travels in the unforgiving Mongolian desert. Those are the ones to
keep around.
Until next time I bid you zai-jian,

Hi, it seems like malaysia produce durians all year rounds these days.
they are delivering the fruits into singapore to sell and sometimes too much
such that it has to be thrown away or sold at very cheap prices. however, it
was told that they use some chemical (I am not sure of the credibility of
this claim) to expedite the growth and the fruits bearings. Cheers. Eng Hock

Fruit remains the largest part of my diet, by far. However, since my
introduction to Durian a few month ago, Durian, alone, is now usually two
meals of the day, sometimes all I eat in a day. It has replaced my all time
favorites of bananas and mangos, and papayas too I guess, and nectaries.
Those are now secondary. Durian is my first choice, every time. I don't know
what they're talking about when they say Westerners don't like it and it
stinks. They clearly are either trying to keep it all for themselves, or
they're just plain nuts. I get some pretty weird looks with 7 of them in my
shopping cart twice a week, every week, but as I see it, it is pure delight.
I can't see how other people can eat the plastic tasting, processed garbage,
foul smelling rot that they do. Durian has to be what God would eat, if He
needed to, if He, if.... The King of fruits - what other fruit is labeled
so? Love it, enjoy it, consume it, cherish it, and when you truly realize
it's yummy worth, do yourself a favor and lay off all of the junk you eat
and drink! Dare to be nuts about Durian. I am.

Not all of the U.S. & Canada eat poorly (just the majority) and am
proudly not one of them and proudly an enthusiastic Durian lover. I'm
Canadian, living in the U.S. for 13 years, and I cannot for the life of me
understand why some people do not like the smell. It is distinctive and
different from other food smells, but so is every food a different smell
from one another. I find it fruity, enticing, alluring, and if I did not
just have some for lunch a few minutes ago, I would want some more right
now. (My husband likes it too and does not mind the smell one
bit.)

i saw a durian in an asian grocery store. after i got home, i spent
the evening reading all about durians. needless to say, i was curious. all
the comments about durians made me so curious.people love them more than
anything or they hate them more than anything. so we went to the store again
this evening and picked a durian. it cost us about $7 canadian (about $5 US
currency. was it worth it? yes. and no. i think it probably gave us the idea
of what a good durian could be. but i don't think this was a good one. how
could it be considering the fruit had to travel half way around the world
and sit on a store shelf for a week to get to me? the taste was very oniony
with pineapple and banana and caramel and custard and a LOT of sulfur. the
strongest taste was the onion. is this characteristic of a normal durian? i
must say that the fruit was so complex that we would surely try it again but
i wouldn't buy one here. perhaps we need to travel to find a good one. we
threw this one out after about 3 small bites each. we are very
curious.
